How Does BOTOX Cosmetic Work?
Botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport, stops activity in the small muscles responsible for creating facial expressions that, over time, result in lines and wrinkles. Treatment can address:
- Forehead creases
- Frown lines (between brows)
- Crows’ feet (around eyes)
- Lines around the mouth and chin
Dysport is a similar product used for many of the same purposes, but is sometimes recommended for larger treatment areas because it disperses farther than BOTOX Cosmetic.
Though injections normally cause little to no discomfort, the doctor can apply a topical numbing gel. Treatment will focus on the areas you and your doctor discussed during your consultation. Immediately after your visit, you can resume non-strenuous activities. Avoid intense exercise the remainder of the day. If you experience any discomfort, simply apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the injection sites.
Am I a Good Candidate?
To qualify for BOTOX Cosmetic, patients should be over 18 years of age and in generally good health. Certain neuromuscular disorders and skin conditions may disqualify a patient. It may not be effective if scars are present. Pregnant or nursing women should refrain from treatment until after pregnancy and breastfeeding have been completed. Your doctor will talk with you to determine whether BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport is an effective treatment option to address your specific needs.
